Introduction

Welcome to my guide on Digital Distribution, I hope that by the end of this guide you will be able to have your movies online and available for the world to see, and hey, you might be able to make a bit of money while doing it. The world of video entertainment, art and expression is changing, it is advancing along with technology at a great pace and luckily, everyone will benefit from this wonderful movement to digital distribution.

Why digital? Since film is becoming archaic, it is almost dead, even in the realm of photography, where only the most die-hard fans of film and professionals that need big prints still use it today. In the half way world of digital distribution, DVDs and Blu Ray discs, the prices are low compared to film but they are still expensive to print out massive quantities of discs in relation to the online digital files.

The problem with physical media is also its biggest strength. Its material, some people enjoy the fact that their media is tangible because they can hold it in their hands and it is collectable, but it is prone to scratching, getting lost or even theft. Digital has the same problems but making copies costs nothing, the same is not true for physical media.

Now in the world of movie production digital has taken over for the amateur filmmakers and is even creeping into big budget Hollywood features, with the advent of 4k+ digital video cameras like the RED, which will have options for the budget independent filmmaker and the biggest productions.

The issue of difference of quality between film and digital will no longer exist at this rate of progress and the new generations are already conditioned to video thanks to Television (especially MTV). Video is the smart choice in the ratio of quality to price between film and video, but if you still insist on shooting your movie on film this guide is still useful if you will want to distribute your movie online after digitizing your movie.

For the independent moviemaker the distribution is a big factor, I mean how else are people going to see your movie? The problem is that it is expensive. Digital will remove most of those costs and replace them with an easier process and even if there is a cost, it will be nowhere near as expensive as they were and still are in the physical world that exists today.
